How Katie & Paul's "Save the Date" illustration went from concept to completion

Katie contacted me about designing a colorful and fun illustration for their summer wedding in NYC. Here is a little explanation of how an idea becomes an Illustration.

Katie shared her concept sketch along with photos, and a little explanation of all the elements she wanted to include.

It was perfect for conveying her layout idea.

Images for the illustration

Photos of Katie, Paul and their adorable pup along with images of the background elements including Central Park, the nearest subway stop to their venue, the William Tecumseh Sherman Monument (that's a mouthful) and their reception venue, The Metropolitan Club.

dress options

What should you wear? A blue suit and brown shoes for him, and a flirty sun dress and nude pumps for her. Hmm... Which dress? ... Lets go with the ruffel dress, but in pink for a nice contrast against the blue jacket for Paul.

Here's my layout sketch. We decided to add a fun bag ( sketched on the vellum overlay) with some colorful flowers and changed the hair a bit for the final painting.

And there you have it, Katie and Paul's "Save the Date" postcard from Concept to Completion.

Until next time..
